The Magic of the Birthday Ring

We added a new Birthday Tradition this year, and we really enjoyed it. I give you....The Birthday Ring!

This pretty European tradition involves a circle of wood, with holes for candles and assorted wooden decorations. There are lots of different decorations available and you choose appropriate ones for your Urchin.

For Baby Man, we chose some water themed things (he's a Pisces), some of his current favourite things (cats, trains, bears, elephants), and other things that directly relate to his life in various ways (we selected a Lion to represent Scooby, a Leo who spends almost every day pretending to be a Lion...)

The idea is to light a candle for every year completed (in this case, two). A special decoration announces the birthday year (in this case, Ali Baba holds the 'three' aloft). This goes on until the child is twelve, and then you simply light the entire ring.

The ring is supposed to appear for just the day of the birthday, but we liked it so much we put it out for the entire month, just adding the candles, the birthday year, and a few special decorations the night before the Big Day.

Thanks for sharing! I've seen these and have been tempted by them. So did you light candles on a traditional cake too? If so, did you do them at the same times?

Hi! They are very nice things. We lit the candles in the morning, and let them burn down at breakfast, and then did a cake with candles in the afternoon. It launched the day with a real sense of ceremony, great stuff.
